Often when we hear the term “bacteria”, we assume we are talking about some harmful infection or disease. The truth, strange as it may sound, is that within our bodies, bacteria outnumber our own cells—and most of the bacterial cells found in our body reside within our digestive system—or gut. Probiotics are microbiomes of “good bacteria” that provide tremendous health benefits.

Having a healthy bacterial balance in our gut is essential for good health—and the benefits are not limited to gut health. Our gut bacteria are also instrumental in manufacturing essential vitamins such as vitamin K and some B vitamins. They can help turn fiber into short-chain fats like butyrate, propionate and acetate which help feed and protect the walls of our intestines and perform many metabolic functions. These fat cells further stimulate our immune system, protect our intestines, and can even help prevent toxic substances from entering your body through such conditions as Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Gut bacteria are highly sensitive to what we eat. Diets high in carbohydrates can cause harmful bacteria to multiply and get stronger; whereas a high fiber diet can help beneficial bacteria to flourish and promote good health. Unbalanced gut bacteria have been linked to many health conditions including diarrhea, constipation, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, Chron’s disease, ulcerative colitis, obesity, type II diabetes, colorectal cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and many others.

Remember that all probiotics are not created equal, different probiotics have different health benefits. To obtain the best results, it’s important to balance the right strains of probiotics in the proper concentrations.
